While historic preservation is at the core of what we do, our approach to this work is much broader. Our holistic strategy begins at the landscape scale, embracing not just buildings but the "spaces in between", too. Recognizing that true heritage conservation efforts require an understanding of the varied narratives that comprise a place, we seek to celebrate both the tangible and intangible aspects of Huntsville's heritage.

Historic spaces are always in a state of "becoming" and it is the role of preservationists to be vigilant stewards of these dynamic places. This means being a partner in the planning process - and an advocate for sites of significance - not an obstacle to development.

Community-Driven

Historic preservation and heritage conservation efforts should always be organic, and led by the community(ies) whose heritage is being affected.

Preservation can only work for a particular group if their values, practices and heritage are being centered in the planning process. This requires historic preservationists to come alongside traditionally under-served communities and help them foreground their interests.

It has been said that, at its best, preservation engages the past in a conversation with the present, over a mutual concern for the future
