Ensuring Historic Data is Preserved for Future Generations
Historic land records, maps and ownership information are crucial sources of data for historic preservationists seeking to document places of significance. All too often such sources exist only in hard copy and are eventually lost to overuse, inadvertent damage or simple neglect.
In Huntsville, sources such as historic city directories, Sanborn & plat maps and legacy property deeds are held in a variety of special collections such as those at the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library and the Probate Court. The vast majority of these records are not digitized and many are in poor condition.
At Preserve Huntsville, we are committed to the digitization of and public access to these materials. We are partnering with local libraries and public authorities to make this happen. Check back soon to learn more about our progress on this front!
